Gumroad alternatives: Payhip, Sellfy, Systeme.io compared
In short
The main Gumroad alternatives are Shoplit.io, our tool, which uses AI to create the ebook and, on request, its sales page, then takes payment into your own Stripe account; Payhip (free plan, marketplace); Sellfy (subscription with no commission); and Systeme.io (capped free plan, plus funnels and email). Gumroad itself stands out for its Discover marketplace and its merchant of record status, which handles sales tax and VAT for you.
Why look for a Gumroad alternative?
Gumroad is simple: upload a file, set a price, share the link. Still, four things push some creators to look elsewhere.
- Fees. Gumroad has no monthly fee, but takes 10% + $0.50 on every direct sale, made from your profile or a link you share. Card or PayPal processing fees come on top (official fee page). When a buyer finds you through its Discover marketplace, the cut rises to 30%, processing fees included. On a low-priced ebook, the fixed amount taken from every sale adds up fast.
- The money goes through Gumroad. As the merchant of record, Gumroad collects the buyer’s payment, then pays you on its own schedule. On weekly, monthly or quarterly payouts, each sale sits in your Gumroad balance for at least 7 days, and you need a minimum balance before any payout (payouts).
- The sales page. Every product gets its own Gumroad page. For a custom page, there is no block editor: you describe the page to an AI agent, which writes it in HTML and publishes it in place of the product page (custom landing pages).
- Language. Gumroad’s site and help center are in English only, which matters if part of your audience reads another language.
None of this is a dealbreaker if you sell from outside the US: Gumroad pays out to local bank accounts in most of Europe and in many other countries, in your own currency, and buyers can pay in theirs on eligible card purchases.

“Merchant of record” has a precise meaning: legally, the platform is the seller. Among these tools, only Gumroad describes itself that way, for all its sales. For EU and UK VAT on digital products, Payhip says it acts as your reseller and takes full responsibility (Payhip VAT page); since July 1, 2026, it also collects US sales tax (US sales tax). Sellfy calculates EU VAT and says it won’t file it for you (taxes on Sellfy); Systeme.io adds it at checkout, and its help article on VAT doesn’t say it remits it for you (VAT on Systeme.io): plan on filing it yourself.
Lemon Squeezy, often named as a Gumroad alternative, is left out of this table on purpose. Bought by Stripe in 2024, it is still online as a merchant of record, at 5% + $0.50 per sale with card fees included (plus surcharges, notably for buyers outside the US). But the company says its goal is to give its users an easy way to migrate to Stripe Managed Payments (official announcement, January 28, 2026). As of October 20, 2026, its sign-up form asks you to describe your business so it can “recommend the best path” and puts Stripe’s merchant of record products up front. Shoplit.io vs Gumroad in detail
Both sell digital files, but only Shoplit.io also writes the ebook.
- Creating the product. Gumroad’s AI connector drafts a product listing (name, price, description), but you add the files yourself (source). Shoplit.io writes and illustrates the ebook from one sentence, and generates its sales page if you ask for it in the same message.
- Getting paid. On Gumroad, the buyer pays Gumroad, the merchant of record, which handles sales tax and VAT and then pays you. On Shoplit.io, the buyer pays into your own Stripe account, Stripe then pays out to your bank, and you file any sales tax or VAT you owe yourself.
- Finding buyers. Discover can recommend your products to new buyers once you have made your first sales and passed a review (Discover). With Shoplit.io, your visitors come from your social accounts, your email list or your ads, and every buyer joins your contacts. From the Pro plan, Meta, TikTok, Google and Pinterest pixels show what your ads bring in. To attract visitors without showing your face, see our guide on how to start a faceless digital business.
- Going further. As your sales grow, Shoplit.io adds email marketing and order bumps from the Pro plan, then funnels with one-click upsells, the AI funnel and video courses on the Business plan, all in the same place.
- Language and currency. Shoplit.io’s interface is in English and French, and each product sells in US dollars or euros. Gumroad is in English, and buyers pay in US dollars or in their local currency where supported.
- Cost. Gumroad costs nothing per month and takes 10% + $0.50 per direct sale. The Shoplit.io Free plan lets you create and sell a first ebook with its sales page, with a 10% commission per sale; the Pro plan, at €29/month, brings the commission down to 0% and adds your own domain. Processing fees apply on top in both cases.
Past a certain sales volume, which depends on your price and how many sales you make each month, a flat subscription costs less than a commission: run the numbers with your own figures. If you don’t have a product yet, our guide on how to create an ebook with AI and sell it walks through the method, from idea to first sale.
Which Gumroad alternative should you choose?
The right tool depends on where you start: a product that is already made, or an idea to turn into one.
When to choose Shoplit.io
Shoplit.io adds the most when you want to create and sell in one place:
- You are starting from an idea, not a file. You describe the ebook to the AI assistant in one sentence; it asks you a few questions, then writes, illustrates and lays out the PDF. Ask for the sales page in the same message: it is written from the ebook, in the ebook’s colors.
- You want to get paid into your own account. The money from each sale goes to your Stripe account, and the buyer gets the file automatically.
- You want to build a sales funnel. On the Business plan, a complementary offer can be bought in one click right after checkout, and the AI funnel builds the whole funnel from your product. The same plan adds video courses, with a student area and lessons you can unlock over time.
- You work in English or French: the interface comes in both languages, and the AI writes the ebook in either one.
When to choose Gumroad
- Your product already exists and you are counting on Discover to put you in front of buyers you wouldn’t have reached on your own.
- You want sales tax and VAT handled for you: as the merchant of record, Gumroad takes care of it in every country, and a setting applies the reduced e-publication VAT rate to ebooks (VAT on Gumroad).
- You sell recurring memberships, pay-what-you-want products or product bundles (product types).
When to choose Payhip
- You want to start with no subscription: its free plan has no product limit and no revenue cap, and takes 5% per sale (Payhip plans), then its commission drops as you upgrade.
- You want a marketplace where you can list your products for free, after review (Payhip changelog), and tax handled as described above. More in our Payhip vs Shoplit.io comparison.
When to choose Sellfy
- You prefer a flat subscription to a commission: 0% on every plan, from $29/month with no commitment.
- You also sell physical products, or print-on-demand t-shirts and mugs (Sellfy features).
When to choose Systeme.io
- You want to build a whole sales journey without paying anything up front: its free plan takes 0% on your sales and includes funnels, a one-click upsell, a course and unlimited emails (pricing), up to $10,000 in lifetime revenue since the account was created (terms).
- You want a funnel tool whose site and help center also come in French.
Leaving Gumroad without losing your customers
- Take stock. List your products, their prices, your discount codes and your active memberships. Memberships need extra care: tell your members before you change anything.
- Gather your files. Keep the final version of each product (PDF, ZIP, videos) on your computer, so you can upload it as is to the new tool.
- Export your customers. In Gumroad, you can download a CSV of your customers and their purchases for any date range, at any time (customer dashboard). Your followers list exports as a CSV too, with their email addresses and the date they started following you (audience). It doesn’t work the other way: Gumroad doesn’t import customers or subscribers.
- Clean the list before importing. In Gumroad, a setting shows whether each customer gets your emails: only import as subscribers the people who agreed to hear from you.
- Rebuild your products and prices. Upload each file, set its price and currency, then recreate your discount codes under the same names, so codes you’ve already shared keep working.
- Turn on payments and sort out tax. If the new tool isn’t the merchant of record, sales tax and VAT, where they apply, are yours to handle. In the EU, VAT on ebooks sold to consumers in other member states is generally due in the buyer’s country, and the One Stop Shop lets you register in a single member state to declare and pay it (European Commission). In the UK, HMRC’s VAT rules for digital services cover ebooks and PDF files sold to consumers (GOV.UK). In the US, sales tax on digital products depends on each state. This is general information, not tax advice: check with an accountant.
- Update your links. Replace the Gumroad links in your bio, your videos, your emails and your ads. Keep your Gumroad account open during the switch.
- Tell your customers. A short email to the people who agreed to hear from you is enough: the new link, and what changes for them.
In Shoplit.io, you import a ready-made PDF or ZIP from the Products menu, with Create a product then Import a file. You turn on payments in Settings, on the Payments tab, by connecting your Stripe account. Discount codes go in Products, then Promotions, on every plan. For your customers, open Marketing, then Contacts, and click Import: the window offers an example file (an email column, then first and last name) and asks you to confirm these contacts agreed to receive your emails. On the Pro or Business plan, you then reach them with email campaigns and automations.

Your storefront, yourname.shoplit.io, replaces your Gumroad profile: add each product’s sales page to it, then put that link in your bio. For your next product, the Shoplit.io AI assistant writes the ebook and, on request, its sales page from a single sentence.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Gumroad take per sale?
On a direct sale, made from your profile or a link you share, Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50, and card or PayPal processing fees come on top. On a sale from its Discover marketplace, it takes 30%, processing fees included. There is no monthly fee, and a lower rate applies to sellers who pass a set sales volume in a calendar month.
Does Gumroad work for sellers outside the US?
Yes. Gumroad pays out to a local bank account, in your local currency, in the UK, Canada, Australia, most of Europe and many other countries, once your balance reaches its minimum. Daily payouts are only available to US sellers. Buyers can pay in their own currency on eligible card purchases, euros and pounds included. The site and help center are in English only.
Is there a Gumroad alternative with no transaction fees?
Yes. Shoplit.io takes 0% commission from its Pro plan, at €29/month, which also includes AI creation of the ebook and its sales page (10% per sale on the Free plan). Sellfy takes 0% on every plan, with a subscription from $29/month. Systeme.io takes 0% even on its free plan, which is capped at $10,000 in lifetime revenue. Payhip drops to 0% with its $99/month plan. In every case, Stripe or PayPal processing fees still apply.
Who pays sales tax and VAT on Gumroad sales?
Gumroad does. Since January 1, 2025, it has been the merchant of record for all sales: it collects and remits sales tax and VAT for you worldwide, and you can’t choose to leave VAT off your digital products. For an ebook, a product setting applies the reduced VAT rate for e-publications. Income tax on your earnings is still yours to report.
Can you keep your customers when you leave Gumroad?
Yes. Gumroad lets you download a CSV of your customers and their purchases for any date range, at any time, plus a list of your followers with their email addresses. Before emailing them from another tool, keep only the people who agreed to receive your emails. Gumroad doesn’t import customers or subscribers, so the move only works one way.
Is Lemon Squeezy still a Gumroad alternative?
Lemon Squeezy is still online as a merchant of record, at 5% + $0.50 per sale with card fees included, plus surcharges, notably for buyers outside the US. But the company, bought by Stripe in 2024, says its goal is to give its users an easy way to migrate to Stripe Managed Payments, and as of October 20, 2026, its sign-up form puts Stripe’s merchant of record products up front.
